Circular Medical Connectors Product Roundup
This week’s Product Roundup highlights circular medical connectors from leading suppliers.
Circular Medical Connectors
Rosenberger’s Power Data Connectors (RoPD) were originally developed for use in light electric vehicles but have found great utility in medical equipment as well. RoPD’s contact system consists of four data contacts and two power transmission pins. Available designs include cable assemblies in black and white as well as panel connectors. Rosenberger’s break-away magnetic self-locating and locking interconnect solutions offer added protection for patient care and medical equipment. Applications include patient monitoring, communication and nurse call systems, bedside entertainment, and surgical equipment. Rosenberger’s magnetic connectors are vibration-proof, cleanable, and guarantee a correct connection even in the most inaccessible locations. The break-away function prevents damage to the connector by unintended disconnection.
LEMO’s REDEL SP plastic push-pull connectors offer an ergonomic grip and are available in a variety of colors. The latch sleeve is recessed into the connector’s body, ensuring greater shock resistance. The outer shell, in proprietary sulfone PPSU material (FDA approved), enables extensive sterilization cycles and high chemical resistance. The use of a rectangular insert conveniently provides a larger area for higher contact density. These connectors are adapted for applications such as medical instrument devices, test and measurement, automotive, and are ideally suited to pairing with Northwire’s robust USP Class VI silicone cable alternative, BioCompatic cable.
Lumberg’s Series 03 circular connectors offer a threaded joint, 360° shielding, IP40 and IP68 protection (SWUM versions are sealed when unmated), easy assembly with solder or crimp technology, and are suitable for signal and load currents up to five amps. A wide range of parts and configurations are available. These connectors comply with IEC 61076-2-106.
CDM Electronics supplies binder’s Miniature 720 Series IP67 connectors. This snap-in connector is a larger version of binder’s Series 620 sub-miniature connector. It offers high performance, gold-plated contacts, and cost-effective pricing. Features include plastic color-coded shells, 3 to 12 contacts per connector, IP67 in mated condition, and internal strain relief. The medical-grade design is DEHP-free, gray-white color (similar to RAL 9002), and is available as cable or flange connectors. Other colors can be ordered.
ITT Cannon’s PL Series of plastic push-pull interconnects is a high quality, versatile, and cost-effective solution for challenging medical applications (such as patient monitoring diagnostics and imaging, and sensors) and industrial applications (such as industrial electronics and commercial instrumentation), where miniaturized, lightweight, and durable connectors are critical to operating performance. Available in 2- to 14-way variants, with durability in excess of 2,000 mating cycles, and with six keying options and seven color codings, the PL Series is an extremely versatile solution for a wide variety of both disposable and reusable applications.
Smiths Interconnect’s D Series quick-disconnect plastic connectors feature simple push-button latching and a D-shaped flange, which makes mating orientation obvious. Three size options accommodate a wide variety of applications. The intuitive and durable D Series offers ease of use and high reliability. It offers significant reductions in size and weight of sub-system designs. No additional hardware is required for mating and unmating. The lower contact resistance results in a lower voltage drop across the connector, reducing the power consumption and heat generation.
Neutrik’s opticalCON HYBRID MED Connector features a pre-assembled male-to-male cable with 16 multimode fiber channels and two power pins, and a shielded system with EMI protection. The ruggedized hybrid connection system contains one lensed MPO connector with 16 fiber channels, two power contacts, and one ground contact. opticalCON HYBRID MED is robust and reliable, with glove protection for easy maintenance. With new technology based on fiber lenses, Neutrik’s opticalCON HYBRID MED achieves an extremely robust signal with minimal loss. Its lenses and an additional sealing cover protect the optical connection against dirt and dust exceptionally well.
Allied Electronics & Automation offers SOURIAU-SUNBANK by Eaton’s JMX Series connectors, an ergonomic and waterproof solution with extreme high-temperature resistance. The JMX series is ideal for applications in physio and medical therapy, patient monitoring, diagnostic device and imaging, surgical and dental systems (instrumentation), and laboratory equipment. Reliable mating and unmating requires only two fingers. The JMX series is waterproof (IP68) in mated or unmated condition and is UL/IEC compliant, making equipment qualification easier. These connectors withstand autoclave steam sterilization with pre-vacuum and gravity displacement process per IEC 60601 and 200 autoclave cycles at 134°C (273°F).
JAE’s JB5 series connectors are small circular connectors with a IP68 waterproof-rating and push-pull mating structure that enables easy one-handed insertion and removal. They have high environmental durability (5,000 cycles) and user-friendly designs that can be widely used in medical, measurement, and communication equipment, as well as in handheld PCs, scanners, and other small equipment. The largest connector of series is available with eight contacts offered in a compact 14.8mm diameter shell (plug outer diameter: 11mm). An audible and tactile “click” confirms secure locking when mating. The metal outer shell and ground terminal in the receptacle ensures excellent shielding. Mis-mating can be visibly prevented with color variation of the plug boots.
NorComp’s QUIK-LOQ push-pull connectors deliver up to 30 amps in a fully shielded high-performance solution able to withstand shock and high vibration in harsh environments. The IP67/IP68 waterproof connectors are robust and reliable for heavy-duty applications. They are available in both metal shell and plastic shell options with various IP ratings. In addition to the push-pull connector latch and release mechanism, the 821B series features a rugged, precision design with machined contacts and housing. It is rated for 2 to 15 amps and offers 360° shielding for full EMI/RFI. NorComp’s medical connector solutions are used in diagnostic imaging, patient monitoring devices, portable medical devices, and surgical and medical equipment.
PEI-Genesis offers LEMO’s B-Series push-pull connector, a secure, push-pull latching system with high-density panel spacing, 360° EMI shielding, and quick mating or unmating. This LEMO push-pull connector series is designed for indoor or vacuum-tight applications, making it an ideal choice for medical devices, test and measurement instrumentation, research, audio/video, and applications where a highly reliable, quick-mating connector is needed. Modular insert configurations include a wide range of high-density or hybrid electrical contacts, including solder, crimp, PCB straight or elbow, fiber, coax, thermocouple, pneumatic, fluidic, or high voltage contacts. LEMO’s proprietary keying system allows for a higher contact density while preventing mismating. The LEMO B-Series push pull connector includes the family size range of 0B to 5B, as well as the 00 multipole and 2G (shortened version of the 2B series).
