This week’s Product Roundup highlights circular Mil-spec connectors from leading suppliers.

Circular MIL-Spec Connectors

CDM Electronics supplies Amphenol PCD MIL-DTL-55181-spec QPL’d Tactical Communications Power Connectors, qualified to MIL-C-55181. MW Series Power Connectors have a center lock coupling screw to ensure the connector can withstand high shock and vibration, and they are waterproof and polarized. These connectors are typically used for the interconnection of power and control circuit electric equipment, especially in military and harsh environments such as for soldier communication and in ground vehicles.

Amphenol Tri-Start MIL-DTL-38999 Series III Connectors from Allied Electronics & Automation offer the highest performance for general duty and severe environment applications. They meet or exceed MIL-DTL-38999 Series III requirements and are available in aluminum, stainless steel, or composite with several finish options. Solid metal-to-metal coupling and grounding fingers provide superior EMI shielding. The 100% scoop-proof design minimizes potential contact damage and improves interfacial sealing. Stainless steel or cadmium over nickel plating helps this connector withstand salt spray for up to 500 hours. The unique, self-locking, quick-coupling connector eliminates lock wiring. Amphenol Tri-Start connectors operate under severe high-temperature vibration, through 200 °C and have firewall capability. They are stainless steel and qualified to BACC63DB and BACC63DC specifications.

PCI offers both military-spec QPL connectors and cable assemblies for tactical communications (TacCom) applications. Products includes QPL MIL-DTL-55181 series cable mount power connectors, QPL MIL-DTL-55116 series audio plugs and receptacles, specialty connectors, adapters, and dust covers, all with an emphasis on solving EMI/RFI challenges.

Interstate Connecting Components (ICC) supplies the Series 80 Mighty Mouse connector in six standard designs, including Glenair’s most recent addition, Series 806 mil-aero micro-miniature connectors. These next-generation high-density connectors are half the size and weight of MIL-DTL-38999 Series III connectors while still meeting stringent requirements for harsh vibration, shock, and environmental settings. The numerous design enhancements of this series include durable mechanical insert retention, radial seals, and triple-ripple grommet seals. In addition, the connectors’ reduced thread pitch and re-engineered ratchet prevent decoupling issues, particularly in small shell sizes. The Series 80 Connector was originally developed as a smaller and lighter alternative to D38999 connectors for aerospace applications such as attack helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles. Today, the Series 80 Mighty Mouse serves in thousands of safety-critical defense, medical, industrial, and geo-physical applications.

Amphenol Pcd offers a complete line of M28840 circular connectors according to MIL-DLT-28840 for shipboard applications, including U.S. Navy shipboard, surface craft and submarines, mission critical combat and communications systems, mobile tactical shelters electronic battlefield networks, and mobile emergency telecommunications (MET) stations. These high-density connectors are precision-machined, highly reliable, and meet superior mechanical shock performances. They are designed and tested to withstand demanding applications and are deployable outdoors in harsh environments. Amphenol also offers the full range of backshells to support this connector series. M28840 shipboard connectors are fully intermateable and interchangeable with any qualified M28840 connector and have backshell designs for strain relief, EMI, and environmental sealing.

SV Microwave has an extensive RF connector MIL-Spec offering with a long history of supporting DLA and promoting the standardization of RF connectors. All are backed by SV Microwave’s complete in-house qualification testing and are available through distribution. The SMA Male Connector with Lockwire Holes for .085 Cable (pictured) features broadband performance DC to 18 GHz with low reflection stainless steel construction and ¼-36 threaded coupling in a high-performance, compact design.

The Tri-Power connector series from Amphenol Aerospace incorporates a choice of RadSok contacts, Temper-Grip high-current contacts, or standard high-power contacts. RadSok Contacts feature low contact engagement/separation force, low contact resistance, and silver-plated contacts. Temper-Grip high-current contacts handle 200+ degrees Celsius with no decrease in performance, feature “napkin-ring” technology that helps maintain a greater area of true contact with pin, and gold-plated contacts. Paired with the proven performance of the MIL-DTL-38999 connector series, the Tri-Power series offers a variety of tooled arrangements specifically designed to carry high current (70 to 250 amps per contact, 240 to 1000 amps per connector). Additionally, this series includes EMI protection with the inclusion of an EMI band on the plug connector, not normally found on other high-power connector series.

BERNIER designed the CMA series circular military connectors for equipment in harsh environments. Appreciated for their toughness and ergonomics in a wide range of applications, the CMA military connectors are equipped with 04, 06, 10, 14, and 22 contacts. They feature push-pull or quick-release connection, stainless steel, and keyways N, W, X, Y, Z, P, and T. Keyway P makes a “double keyways” plug possible, for example, CMA 5NP14 mating an N keyway receptacle and a P keyway receptacle.  Keyway T mates with all keyways.

SnapTac Series from Smiths Interconnect is a MIL-Spec type, quick release miniature connector, featuring IP67 sealing and EMI shielding. Lightweight and robust, it is available in both circular (7, 13, 19 ways) and rectangular (12, 21, 30 ways) versions equipped with Hyperspring contacts, and designed to protect the electrical interface against extreme environmental conditions. The connector plug is offered with and without over-molding and cabling following requests for both turn-key solutions and easy integration into existing designs. A key feature within the Snaptac connector range is in the design of the spring-loaded contact. The combination of a hyperboloid socket with a spring-loaded plunger provides a compressible contact that enables the characteristics of very low and stable contact resistance, high current carrying capability, and extremely low wear mechanisms for extended operation over time to be realized within a sealed while unmated connector system.
