SPE Connectors Product Roundup
This week’s Product Roundup highlights SPE (single-pair Ethernet) connectors from leading connector manufacturers and suppliers.
SPE (single-pair Ethernet) connectors
As part of the SPE Industrial Partner Network, KYOCERA AVX offers SPE products that meet the standards according to IEC 63171-6 and IEEE 802.3. As the Industrial Ethernet market continues to grow, designers continue to look for smaller and faster connectors to fit their needs. This has driven single-pair Ethernet to the forefront. Single-pair Ethernet (SPE) describes the transmission of Ethernet over only one pair of twisted copper wires. In addition to data transmission via Ethernet, SPE also enables a simultaneous power supply of terminal devices via PoDL (power over data line). Previously, this required two pairs for Fast Ethernet (100MB) and four pairs for Gigabit Ethernet. In addition to space and weight savings with less wire, SPE transmits 1 Gb/s up to 40 meters.
TE Connectivity’s M8 Hybrid solution available from Avnet allows for a single open, scalable Ethernet-based network within automation systems. It standardizes the transmission of Ethernet over only one pair of copper wires. In addition to data transmission via SPE, the M8 Hybrid IP67 solution also provides power transmission over a separate wire pair. Data transmission is possible up to 1 Gb/s, and power supply up to 400 W. At 10 Mb/s speed transmission, distances up to 1,000 meters are possible.
The IP20 connectors and patch cables in Phoenix Contact’s ONEPAIR series enable efficient data transmission in factory automation and building automation, as well as in numerous other fields and industries.
Amphenol Communications Solutions IP67-rated SPE connectors have a circular M12 size form factor with push-pull positive latching. Robust panel-mount receptacles are available with right angle and vertical PCB tails or solder cups for discrete wire termination. When mated with the field terminable plugs, a completely sealed and shielded interface is provided, rated up to 4A supporting PoDL (power over data line) up to 1 km when using 18AWG single pair cable. They are fully compatible with IEC 63171-6 interconnects from other authorized vendors, ensuring future compatibility and investment security. The mechanically robust and secure latching with 360° shielding offers excellent performance in harsh environments. IP67 sealing provides protection from water ingress including full immersion in mated conditions. Field terminable IDC plugs provide installation flexibility. High strength plastic plug housing and coupling mechanism reduces weight and cost.
Weidmuller USA offers a full suite of SPE connectors for the circuit board as well as connecting cables. Single-pair Ethernet is a technology that only requires one pair of wires to transmit data and power. The resulting benefits will make SPE the preferred network at the field level and beyond. SPE is consistent, enabling uniform Ethernet-based communication from the sensor to the cloud; future-proof, key technology for Industry 4.0 and IIoT; flexible, ranges of up to 1000 m and transmission properties of up to 1 Gb/s enable use across applications; and innovative and lighter, with less space required and reduced installation effort.
ATTEND’s T1 Industrial SPE connector series represents cutting-edge single-pair Ethernet (SPE) technology, engineered to meet the rigorous demands of modern industrial applications. These high-performance connectors utilize advanced SPE architecture, offering a compact, lightweight, and cost-effective Ethernet transmission solution with enhanced security features. Optimized for seamless integration and cross-platform compatibility, the T1 Industrial connectors fully comply with IEEE 802.3 SPE T1 standards and adhere to IEC 63171 specifications. This standards-based design ensures robust interoperability across a wide range of industrial devices, cabling systems, and network infrastructures, while supporting Ethernet data rates from 10 Mb/s to 1 Gb/s.
