What is an FMLB Connector?
A first mate-last break (FMLB) connector is an electrical connector engineered so the ground contact connects before any other pins when mating and disconnects after all other pins when unmating. According to Mill-Max, this ensures that the ground path is established before any other power or signal connections are made, eliminating stray currents that can damage devices or components. If no ground is established prior to hot swapping or hot plugging, the circuit may generate equalizing currents seeking a low resistance path. This can also be a safety hazard for operators handling these components.
First mate-last break is understood as an engineering principle, rather than a specific connector type. It is achieved by making the ground pin slightly longer than the other pins, so it is first to mate and last to unmate or break the connection. They are used in Industrial/factory automation, medical devices, power and signal connectivity with specific grounding requirements, and hot swap/hot plug applications.
Origin & Development
FMLB is not a proprietary invention. The practice of incorporating a longer grounding pin is longstanding and widely used. A 2008 patent filing (US7404720B1) for an FMLB-related improvement states, “Electrical connectors have been known for numerous years. Many of these electrical connectors use a first mate-last break (FMLB) configuration…[in which] two contacts of different lengths are installed within a connector body such that the shortest contact does not make a connection until after the longer contact is partially engaged.” This FMLB description is listed under “Description of Related Art.”

Design Highlights
Engineers and designers choose FMLB connectors based on multiple considerations.
Pin/contact sequencing mechanism determines how the timing offset is achieved. Taller pins can be located in specific positions and engineers must confirm that the offset meets timing and safety margins.
Current and power rating per contact can vary widely by manufacturer and even between product lines depending on contact material and spring force between the mating pin and receptacle. Engineers must check each manufacturer’s specific rating methodology when comparing.
Application environment and purpose impacts sealing, ruggedness, and cycle life. Medical/surgical applications may require full sealing and potting to survive autoclaving, gold-plated contacts, and rust-proof construction while industrial settings prioritize grounding continuity and connection sequencing across machinery, control equipment, and ruggedized enclosures where electrical faults and environmental exposure are concerns. Spring-loaded pogo-pin FMLB designs are often preferred for repeated-cycle applications.
Compliance/regulatory standards identify appropriate connector families: IEC 60601-1 for medical devices and DIN VDE 0627/IEC 61984 or MIL-C-5015/SAE AS50151 for industrial gear.
Mechanical footprint and compatibility with existing hardware impact intermateability with legacy footprints for retrofit, replacement, or platform-standardization projects where they want improved grounding without redesigning surrounding hardware. Pitch/pin-center spacing, single- vs. double-row layout, and SMT vs. through-hole mounting factor into board or panel layout constraints.
Signal integrity for sensitive analog or high-speed data lines is improved with grounding-first sequencing. FMLB prevents unpredictable floating signals that can cause crosstalk and capacitive coupling issues.

FMLB connectors are used across markets in applications that require protection of equipment and personnel from stray currents and electrostatic discharge (ESD), safe hot-swap/hot-plug servicing, or meeting a safety-critical regulatory standard (Medical, Industrial, Military and aerospace).
