FFC/FPC Product Roundup

This week’s Product Roundup highlights Flat Flexible Cables (FFCs) and Flexible Printed Circuits (FPCs) from leading suppliers.

FFC/FPC

Greenconn offers various FPC/FFC connectors ranging from ZIF to non-ZIF types with an extensive combination of actuators, pitch sizes, and circuit sizes to support electronics manufacturers with reliable, robust, and easy-to-use connector solutions. As one of the prevalent cable connector alternatives for smart applications, the profile design of FPC/FFC fits well in tight spaces, which is a plus with the constantly decreasing form factor criteria. Featuring high density, small size, light weight, and great flexibility, Greenconn FPC/FFC connectors are widely used in consumer electronics such as mobile phones, PDAs, digital cameras, and laptops. For example, with FPC/FFC connection, the display screen of a digital camera can be pulled out or flexibly adjusted without affecting the electrical connection with the main body.

The JF08 Series of complete harness assemblies from JAE use an FFC compatible with high-speed differential signals commonly used in consumer devices to interface with LCD/OLED displays, camera modules, and various I/O daughter boards. JF08 Series harnesses mate with existing FI-R Series receptacle connectors.

One-action type 6817 Series FPC/FFC connectors from KYOCERA AVX utilize a proprietary structure that enables quick, stable connections in a single insertion, removing a significant impediment to fully automated assembly. Since the actuator can be held open, it is possible to remove FPC/FFCs with one hand, and it is also possible to mount the connector on a limited workspace. 6817 Series connectors are space-saving: the vertical type that mounts perpendicular to the circuit board for vertical insertion is 5.32 mm high on a PCB and 2.9 mm wide, and the right-angle type mounting parallel to the board for horizontal insertion is 2.6 mm high on a PCB and 5.9 mm wide. These connectors were designed to work with the V-by-One HS transmission interface, which reaches speeds up to 3.75 Gb/s. (“V-by-One” is a registered trademark of THine Electronics Inc.)

RS supplies FCI Basics the Clincher 2.54 mm pitch connector family that includes single-row pin-and-receptacle connectors designed for termination to flat flexible circuitry. The addition of keying and active latching options to the receptacle offering make Clincher products the smart choice for many applications. All receptacle connectors use the same customer-preferred and patented Clincher contact and are ideal for applications where shock or vibration are concerns.

Nicomatic’s Flat Flexible Cable, offered by Powell, consists of tin-plated copper conductors laminated between polyester films with a thermal adhesive for durability. With pitch density down to 0.50 mm and capable of millions of cycles in high flexing environments, FFC cables are used in a wide variety of electronic applications for board-to-board interconnections.

Amphenol LTW offers FFC (Flexible Flat Cable) and FPC (Flexible Printed Circuit) solutions for various electronic interconnection needs, prioritizing flexibility and space-saving. Amphenol LTW’s ZConnect® Low-Profile LV214-Compliant Connectors provide secure mating with a 2nd lock design, saving space with a maximum mated height of 8mm. These robust connectors meet automotive LV214 requirements, offering 8 to 40 contacts at 1A up to 120VDC and pitches of 0.9mm, 1.8mm, and 2.7mm. Available to provide FPC, FFC, and Wire-to-Board solutions. ZConnect® delivers anti-vibration and audible feedback, along with multiple contacts, ensuring cost-effective and reliable solutions.

With a patented auto-locking feature, I-PEX EVAFLEX FFC/FPC products are operator-friendly and can be used in production with robotic automation. The auto-lock structure creates excellent retention force against pulling and vibration. Feature options include high temperature operation (up to 125  ⁰C) and EMC shielding. MINIFLEX FFC/FPC connectors offer a variety of pin counts and pitch ranges from 0.5 mm down to 0.175 mm, one of the world’s smallest. With precisely designed and manufactured contacts, these connectors function reliably even after being closed/locked accidently without an FPC inserted.

Axon FFCAxon’ Cable manufactures flat flexible cables (FFC) for board-to-board connection and for board-to-display connection.  They are used in automotive, industry, electronics applications, and are being developed for space applications. Some versions are designed for dynamic applications including automatized equipment and laboratory analyzers. Axon’s FFC are available from 0.30 mm to 1.25 mm pitch. They are insulated with polyester or polyimide (for temperature issues). In addition to the standard range, Axon’ has developed custom designed flat flex cables incorporating folds, shields, notches, punching, slitting, marking or special mounting methods. FFC are compatible with ZIF and LIF connectors.
