Meet the Connector: ix Industrial

The ix Industrial connector is a miniature high-speed Ethernet connector used in industrial applications. It is also known as an IP20 Industrial Ethernet connector, referring to its ingress protection, which protects connections from the harsh operating environments present in factories and other industrial network applications. The connector provides a more durable and reliable option for factory automation and other Industry 4.0 and Industrial Internet of Things environments.

Unlike the Ethernet connectors commonly used in office environments, ix Industrial connectors are ruggedized against factors like dust, moisture, vibration, chemicals, and temperature extremes. They are typically also shielded against electromagnetic interference (EMI). They feature a compact form factor that makes them suitable for installations with limited room.

The ix Industrial connector is a small, square-shaped connector housed in a rugged plastic housing. It features a push-pull locking mechanism, which simplifies installation and removal, even in tight spaces, reducing downtime during equipment maintenance or reconfiguration. They can also be field-attachable, allowing users to terminate cables on-site without requiring specialized tools or equipment.

Design Notes

Standardization: ix Industrial connectors are an industry standard in compliance with IEC 61076-3-124.

Coding: ix Industrial connectors may have coding to prevent accidental mis-mating.

Sealing: The original ix Industrial connector features IP20 sealing but IP65/IP67 versions are also available.

High data speeds: Data transmission rates range from 10 Mb/s to 1 Gb/s. 100 Mb/s is the most common speed used in industrial Ethernet applications.

Protocols: Industrial Ethernet uses specialized protocols in conjunction with Ethernet, such as PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, SERCOS III, and POWERLINK.

Topology: While commercial Ethernet is configured in a star topology, Industrial Ethernet has many options, including star, tree, line, and ring topologies, to enable it to support various industrial applications.

Cable considerations: ix Industrial connectors require a heavier duty cable than office Ethernet configurations. They may be paired with light or heavy-duty Ethernet cables.

Markets, Sectors, and Applications

Industrial, Transportation, Medical, Mil/Aero

ix Industrial connectors are used in factory settings, automotive production lines, industrial robotics, sensor and control systems, rail networks, and other industrial settings.
