Covering the broad topic of “audio and video connectors” is challenging — it’s almost impossible to discuss all the latest advancements in every type of application bundled into this market sector. So we collected the newest and/or flagship products of top connector suppliers as a snapshot of the current product offerings.
TE Connectivity offers a variety of audio/video connectors, cable assemblies, and adapters designed to meet the VESA DisplayPort audio/video interconnect specification for both high and low bit rate cables. These new products enable high definition media content on computers and audio/visual components. The TE Connectivity cable assemblies have achieved full certification as defined in DisplayPort Specification Version 1.1a, by passing a thorough battery of tests performed by an independent VESA authorized test center. These certified cable assemblies are based on consistent transmission of digital data through one, two, or four main link lanes at the reduced bit rate of 1.62 Gb/s per lane or high bit rate of 2.7 Gb/s per lane. This yields excellent HD quality video for both computer and consumer applications.
The V-Lock system by Schurter is a simple solution to prevent unintentional unplugging. Various connectors, power entry modules, and several country-specific power cables are available with this option. The V-Lock locking system can be used for 10A and 16A power inlets and connectors according to IEC 60320. This system works in such a way that there is a pin in the socket, interlocking with a notch in the plug so it prevents an unintentional pullout of the power cable. The advantage is that there is no need for a specific socket system or retaining device to be adapted and built in. The lock is released by pressing on the releasing lever. This lever is easily detected by its bright yellow color and thus distinguishes this system from existing power cable connections. The extraction force is a minimum of 200 N. Typical applications are in medical appliances, analysis and laboratory instruments, telecom and IT devices, power distribution, or radio and TV studios.
LEMO, a global leader in the design and manufacture of precision custom connection solutions, also provides high-quality connectors to the audio and video market, including solutions for field (harsh environments) and studio (indoor use) applications. LEMO’s audio/video products include its well-established 3K.93C HDTV connectors (SMPTE-compatible), digital media converters, fusion splicing, cable assemblies, and the latest in fiber optic maintenance, inspection, and cleaning tools.
Molex offers the next generation of digital interface for PC and CE markets, the external DisplayPort Interconnect System. DisplayPort is designed for internal and external system solutions for high bandwidth audio and video data transfer in the notebook and PC market. The standards, defined by Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA), cover provisions for high definition digital audio-video and graphics streaming via the interface through the same cable. This reduces cost and provides ease of use through the plug-and-play feature, making it user-friendly for consumer applications. It also provides performance scalability for future developments of high-quality displays, high color depths, and high refresh rates display.
FCI’s SuperSpeed USB 3.0 rugged connector provides the power efficiency, bandwidth, and headroom required for Flash-based products and other emerging consumer and industrial data applications. The SuperSpeed USB 3.0 connector supports a 5-gigabit-per-second data rate and 10x performance increase versus USB 2.0 connectors. The connector is backward-compatible with the USB 2.0 connector, and improves rich-media device interaction in consumer electronics and audio/video applications.
The HARTING Technology Group has expanded its know-how from wind energy, railroad technology, and automation efficiency to security and surveillance technology, due to customer demand for superior quality and longevity under adverse conditions for products in this application area. The HARTING PushPull connectors in variant 4 provide a simple and reliable connection for radio antennas and video cameras. Utilizing Power-over-Ethernet, one termination can handle both the power supply and data transmission. Even data rates up to 10 Gb/s and fiber-optic termination variants are possible. The connectors are ideal for reliable connections in radio antennas and video cameras.
More than 200 different vehicle models on the road contain Lumberg components. The special contact systems include, for example, the infotainment components that allow the vehicle occupants to connect MP3 players via USB, jack, or RCA interfaces (Aux-in). They are engineered according to the individual customer’s specifications. Additionally, Lumberg offers numerous circular connectors for audio/visual applications as well as Universal Serial Bus interfaces that meet USB 2.0 and 3.0 specifications for transmission and digital video interfaces according to IEEE 1394.
